…a term heard daily at beauty school and more often than not, accompanied by a case of butterflies-in-the-stomach or for me, a very furrowed brow. There was SO MUCH pressure surrounding the big test that I found the instructors used it like a golden carrot. ‘You’ll want to highlight that, it’ll be on the state boards‘. ‘Pay attention to what I’m doing here girls, because THIS will be on the state boards’. Whenever we want to get your attention ladies, we’re just gonna loop the words ‘state boards’ into the conversation as that’ll SURELY keep your focus (wink wink). So with all the state board talk going on, imagine the anxiety surrounding having to wait an agonizing three months to take the darn test, fearing the worse outcome. Too much time is not always a good thing.
As school drew to a close, and we had our final big test – the MOCK STATE BOARD – which, we were assured was as close to the real deal as one could get, we studied what seemed like a thousand review sheets covering anatomy, chemistry, electricity & all the other endless chapters that consumed our 6 month education, all in preparation for the big one before the big one.
But once school ended, we were all left to our own devices and priorities to attend to. A few of the girls formed a study group & repeatedly asked me to join but truthfully, I don’t study well in groups & I have some strange memory retention methods that’ll screw up most people’s study habits…
…..I know Faradic Current is the only interrupted current because Farrah was the last member of Destiny’s Child to leave the group….. see what I mean & that’s just the start of it…..don’t judge me.
So, I politely declined the many invites & just opted to study alone…. except…
I couldn’t seem to find my study groove until the week prior to the test. I tried & tried but it just wasn’t clicking. Too much time off perhaps? Maybe. Too much ‘me’ time? Possible. Nothing seemed to click until the week of the test, which considering the amount of time allowed, just didn’t seem like the best possible process. Nevertheless, I regrouped & got to it. I studied every day, night & right up until the morning of the big test. After taking the 4hr drive to the test site & settling into my hotel room, I commenced to studying & continued the next morning until it was time to pack it in & take the plunge.
